Erie men on trial on illegal fishing charges

  #

At what tenth-inch does a translucent fishing line netted and stretched in the waters of Lake Erie cross the line between business as usual and a crime?

That is the question before an Erie County judge who is weighing charges that Pennsylvania's last Lake Erie commercial fishermen used illegal gill nets to seine prize perch, bass and other fish species from the lake off the coast of Harborcreek.

Gerald Mathers, 67, and his son, Aaron Mathers, 27, owners and operators of Big Tony-the Last Fisherman, on East Lake Road, stand accused of casting illegal gill nets, with a span of more than half a mile, a year ago.

The government says the nets, 23 panels made of thin, dyed monofilament strands, were illegally designed to trap fish by the gills.   more...

Tell your fish story to the state

  #

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will be out collecting data at lakes, rivers and Great Lakes ports - seeking information about anglers' fishing experiences this year as fishing season opens this Saturday.

DNR creel clerks will ask anglers how long they fished, what species they were targeting and how many fish were harvested and/or released. In some cases, clerks may ask to measure or weigh fish and take scale samples.  more...

A salmon balancing act for Lake Michigan fishery managers

  #

The people who manage salmon in Lake Michigan will have to decide soon how many fish to put into the lake.  The salmon fishery is a manmade industry in the Great Lakes.  It’s produced by planting millions and millions of fish in the lakes.  But keeping the salmon population in balance with the food supply is a challenge these days.  And some scientists are raising new questions about the salmon’s demise in Lake Huron and whether that can be stopped in Lake Michigan.

Salmon were brought in from the Pacific Ocean.  more...

Where are all the salmon?

  #
Where are all the salmon? That’s the question being asked right now among Lake Michigan’s fisherman.

Usually in March, Berrien County’s coast is becoming a salmon haven for fisherman. Not this year.

It’s a good day to fish for William Parker. Parker sat on St. Joseph’s pier Monday with three others and caught about three fish an hour. The fish Parker was catching weren’t the type he was hoping for this spring.

“I didn’t get my salmon stamp this year,” he said. “It didn’t seem like there were that many. Parker heard about the poor salmon fishing in Lake Michigan and opted to not even try.  more...

Minnesota DNR re-evaluates Lake Superior rainbow stocking

  #

Just as the sun rises over Lake Superior on Tuesday morning, a lone angler hooks a Kamloops rainbow trout just west of the French River. He plays the fish quickly and slides it onto the pebbled beach. Without ceremony, he extracts his hook and walks the fish over the cobblestones, away from the lake.

The fish is a 6- or 7-pound male, sleek of body, long of jaw, silver with a blush of rose down its flank. A gorgeous fish. In the soft peach light of dawn, the angler lays the fish behind a piece of driftwood and goes back to his fishing.   more...

DNR, anglers discuss threats to fishing in Lake Michigan in 2012

  #

ZEELAND -- Fishermen attending the Spring Salmon Spectacular hosted by Lakeshore Outfitters of Saugatuck were more concerned about the status of their chinook salmon fishery in Lake Michigan than the imposing thought of Asian carp.

That's no surprise to Michigan Department of Natural Resources senior fisheries biologist Kregg Smith. He shares their concern for the salmon, but also has to keep his mind on the foe from the south.  more...

GREAT LAKES: Anglers best to stick to protected areas

  #
Warm daytime temperatures have eroded ice this week on an already unstable Green Bay system, and anglers are urged to stick to protected bays and harbors or stop at bayside bait and tackle shops for the latest updates on offshore areas to avoid. On Tuesday, fishermen were reporting 5 to 10 inches of ice in many areas, including along the east shore and on up to southern Door County. However, there is a large section of open water, some very thin areas that recently froze over and numerous cracks to be aware of.  more...

Upper Peninsula lake is quietly becoming ice fishing hotbed

Three Things BoatUS Angler Prizewinner Rick Clark Learned While Fishing With Mark Zona

  #

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. November 10, 2011 – Largemouth bass angler Rick Clark of Crystal River, Florida, recently went on the fishing trip of a lifetime to Northern Michigan, guided by none other than BoatUS Angler member and outsized television fishing show personality Mark Zona. Clark’s girlfriend, Layne Lowrey, also of Crystal River, won the fishing trip in a contest for members of BoatUS Angler, and gifted the prize to Rick, proclaiming herself the “best girlfriend ever”.

Of course Rick agreed (as would any wise angler), and while fishing with the “Awesome Fishing Show” host in the backwoods near Traverse City, Michigan, Clark said he learned three important things:  more...

Efforts to bolster lake herring populations in Lake Huron may be stunted by deadly disease

  #

Algae blooms, overfishing and invasive species depleted once thriving schools of Great Lakes herring.

Now Michigan officials want to bring them back in Lake Huron. But there’s a new concern – lake herring are highly susceptibility to an emerging fatal fish disease.

Researchers found that lake herring are prime targets for Viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus. It causes organs, skin and muscles to hemorrhage. The eyes of the sick fish bulge, they are covered by open sores and they eventually die.  more...

Sturgeons find operating room

  #

A lake sturgeon found in a water pipe off Chicago this fall sparked reminders that the great fish of Lake Michigan are coming back. And the big prehistoric fish are great nomads, too.

“They wander around the lake extensively,’’ said Rob Elliott, a fisheries biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “If a fish swims just a mile an hour, it could swim from one end of the lake to the other in about a week.

“With 15 to 25 years to maturity, they wander around for a lot of years before they go back to the rivers where they were spawned. It is not uncommon to find them throughout Lake Michigan. It could have come from a number of rivers in Green Bay or northern Lake Michigan, or six rearing facilities that have been stocking for about the past five years.’’   more...

The mystery of the Elk Lake lake trout

  #

It was the biggest lake trout the Michigan Department of Natural Resources team had netted yet out of Elk Lake.

More than 34 inches long, the lake trout looked like a battleship: tattered fins, a scarred body -- an old fish, said Patrick O'Neill, fisheries technician with the DNR.

The DNR team was netting in Elk Lake near Elk Rapids, at the behest of Jory Jonas, a research biologist with the Charlevoix Fisheries Research Station.

"Five years ago, we were doing a large lake survey on this system, and we pulled in some lake trout," said Jonas. "They just looked different, like something special."  more...
