Sailing On Ice? Yeah, That's A Sport.- Editor H2ONotes [ 2/29/2012 - 05:42 ] #
The minute I learned that ice sailing was an actual sport, I wanted to give it a try. I watched YouTube videos
of wooden boats with big white sails zooming across the ice on steel
runners. It seemed like such a rush: Imagine racing over a frozen lake
on a wind-powered sled, hitting speeds that top 40 miles an hour. So
I was delighted when Andy Sajor, of Plattsburgh, N.Y., offered to let
me hitch a ride over an icy Lake Champlain. The 13th largest lake in the
country, Champlain sits between upstate New York and Vermont and has
emerged as one of the best ice sailing venues in the U.S. We
meet at Chazy Landing on the New York side of Lake Champlain, 12 miles
from the Canadian border. It's bright and windy. The ice stretches for
miles, dotted by camps of shanties set up by ice fisherman. I'm bundled
up in four layers of winter clothing. Sajor hands me a crash helmet and
ski goggles. more...

Coast Guard warns of unsafe ice on Lake Superior- Editor H2ONotes [ 2/21/2012 - 07:01 ] # The U.S. Coast Guard Station Duluth warned the public of unsafe ice Sunday. “Ice
conditions are deteriorating rapidly. Major wet cracks and ice breaks
have been recognized the last few days,” Boatswains Mate Third Class
Matthew Murphy said. “With forecasted temps climbing to the high 30s,
this will only accelerate weakening ice.” Warm weather and
shifting winds have combined to create extremely hazardous ice on the
St. Louis River, according to the Coast Guard. more...

Islanders rhythm upset without Lake Superior ice road- Editor H2ONotes [ 2/13/2012 - 06:32 ] # A warm winter is keeping the ferry running between Madeline Island and Bayfield ... much to the chagrin of islanders. The
ice road is all people talk about these days at the Beach Club on
Madeline Island. Leslie Mack knows. She goes there during happy hour. "You
know, it's 'What have you heard? What have you heard? Is there any
chance we might get an ice road? Who went through the ice?' We've had
one snowmobile go through already," she says. More...

GREAT LAKES: Anglers best to stick to protected areas- Editor H2ONotes [ 2/6/2012 - 10:18 ] # Warm daytime temperatures have eroded ice this week on an already
unstable Green Bay system, and anglers are urged to stick to protected
bays and harbors or stop at bayside bait and tackle shops for the latest
updates on offshore areas to avoid. On
Tuesday, fishermen were reporting 5 to 10 inches of ice in many areas,
including along the east shore and on up to southern Door County.
However, there is a large section of open water, some very thin areas
that recently froze over and numerous cracks to be aware of. more...

Ice boaters in Loveland seek adrenaline, speed, thrills- Editor H2ONotes [ 2/6/2012 - 10:16 ] # On a day that wind speeds reached nearly 30 mph,
biting gusts roared like a lion across Boedecker Lake, announcing a
coming storm.
The conditions turned the lake into an isolated ice desert. They
also prompted Loveland resident Rick Hypes to rush there with a smile --
a big smile -- and a specially designed ice boat.
"It's exactly like sailing on the ice," Hypes said. "But it's
colder and faster ... I describe it as a four- or five-senses sport."
The appeal of sitting on a small craft outfitted with three large
blades and a sail, steering with your feet and zipping across the ice
without brakes, powered only by wind gusts, is difficult to explain
without experiencing it. But Hypes chooses a few words: adrenaline,
speed, thrill.
"It's the allure of being powered by nature," added fellow ice boater Dan Kellogg, also a Loveland resident.
Ice boating can be traced back thousands of years as a form of
transportation in Scandinavia, and it spread to the United States with
immigrants in the 1800s. more...

DILLON - At the Dillon Marina, the boats are in dry
dock, wearing their white winter plastic coats and an 8-inch layer of
ice now covers the Reservoir. But Dan Burnett's short and sweet sailing
season has just started.
"Lake Dillon gets between a week and two weeks of good ice boating," said Burnett.
He's one of a few who raise their sails after the snow falls, taking
part in a unique high adrenaline winter sport called ice sailing. more...

2011 DN Great Western- Editor H2ONotes [ 12/5/2011 - 11:30 ] # The Great Western Challenge
is the official start to the Iceboating season for those of us in the
USA. It has grown in popularity and this year over 75 Iceboats gathered
in a remote Minnesota town called Ashby, which has Lake Christina. The
lake is round, about 2 miles by 2 miles and the ice was nearly
flawless!
For those of us from Toledo, we
started chatting this event up after we made the trek to Lake Sturgeon
in 2010. The message we brought back was the fun involved in having an
informal gathering and the ability to get some early season practice in
before the lakes & bays freeze around our home waters. Last year 3
of us went from Toledo. This year 7 (one by way of Kansas City). more...

Boating: Ice boating helps sailors get through winter- Editor H2ONotes [ 10/3/2011 - 09:32 ] # As the season draws to an end, boaters find themselves with the age-old
question of how to get through the long, cold Maine winter. Some enjoy winter sports like skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling.
Many will spend the off-season on boat improvement projects. Others will
go south and charter a boat for a week or two. The really lucky ones
take their own boats south and spend the winter where it's warm.
Then there's a group of die-hard adventurers who will be looking for
every opportunity to sail right here this winter. Members of the
Chickawaukie Ice Boat Club (CIBC), based in Rockport, and ice boating
enthusiasts across New England know that sailing can be just as fun --
maybe even more so -- on "hard water." more...

Northern Michigan Glaciers- Editor H2ONotes [ 3/7/2011 - 20:33 ] # John Yonkers shares his “Pure Michigan Moment,” a recent glacier adventure while visiting his family in northern Michigan.
If snowshoeing recharged my batteries two weekends ago, then the trip
this weekend was the equivalent of swapping the old rechargeables out
for new lithium ion ones!
After my Criminal Law midterm on Friday, my girlfriend Chelsea and I
hopped into the Subaru and pointed north for what I thought was to be a
weekend of quiet, boring studies. However, this weekend kicked more butt
than I could have ever imagined. Not only did I get the majority of my
work done, but I also spent time with my family, and we even got some
outdoors time in! more...
